Healthy coping with heat and pollen in a changing climate

Welcome to GoHot: Managing heat and pollen healthily in a changing climate

The GoHot project focuses on understanding and reducing the health risks associated with heat and pollen in a changing climate. Starting in early 2025, a consortium of 16 organizations will work together for 19 months to gather important knowledge about who is most at risk, when it happens, and how to inform and protect people in a timely manner.

This project is subsidized by ZonMw under the program: Climate and Health 2.

Why this project?

Climate change increases the likelihood of extreme heat and higher pollen concentrations. This poses a growing health risk to many people, especially vulnerable groups such as young children and the elderly.

In June 2023, nearly 900 more people than normal died in the Netherlands due to the combination of heat and high pollen concentrations. This is expected to increase further in the coming years.

It is therefore important to better understand what changes are taking place and what this means for our health.

Our approach

The GoHot project combines knowledge from different disciplines such as epidemiology, physiology, sociology and communication sciences. We are using existing data and new techniques to investigate how to address heat stress and pollen without exacerbating other health problems. We also explore how behavior change can be achieved so that people adjust their behavior to better protect themselves from these hazards.

The Project

Together we make impact

By joining forces with research institutions, governments and civil society organizations, we ensure that the insights from this research actually reach society.
